Disappointment

This is about gay marriage. Some of you may be offended. Feel free to stop reading if you wish.
I'm pretty f'ing upset that the state of Maine recently voted on whether or not to include gay and lesbian couples equal rights under the institution of marriage. It's absolutely ludicrous to me that we, as a society, think it's okay to vote on this sort of thing. Like it's ours to permit or deny in the first place.
While others will say that this vote was a perfect example of democracy in action, I will argue that the result of this vote highlights one of the key problems with the democratic system. We feel justified in denying the basic rights of marriage to gay and lesbian couples simply because a very, very slim majority of the people said so. And we ignore the fact that 48% of the people who voted in this election voted to expand the definition of marriage to include both heterosexual and homosexual couples. But that's how democracy works, doesn't it? And it's the best system we have, so what else are we going to do? "Why don't you move to a communist country if you don't like it. People fought and died for your right to vote."
Give me a break. People fought and died for our freedoms as a whole, not just right to vote. Our veterans fought and died for the right of our people to have the freedom to simply be who and what they are. The freedom to not only say what we feel like saying, or to own a shit-ton of handguns, but also for our rights to love and marry the people who make us feel most like ourselves. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Personal fulfillment. The feeling of being complete with ourselves and with another, regardless of what that person has between their legs.
Marriage is "defined" as one man and one woman, huh? That's what you're going to go with? And you're comfortable denying basic human rights to what essentially amounts to roughly 40 million Americans because of that sort of semantic debate?
As much as I pray and try to search for understanding and clarity on this issue, I've never heard God telling me that I should get caught up in the semantics of anything when the question of Love is on the line.
I hear a lot of Christians saying that "those people" can have their civil unions, but that we shouldn't dare try to call what they have "marriage." That we should give them their rights, but still make sure that everyone knows that what they have is different than what we have. That we should continue to push gay and lesbian people away from our society and keep them separate.
Stop focusing on yourselves and trying to make yourselves feel better about the fact that you're actively creating a second class within our society. Stop focusing on what's going into which hole (or not, for that matter) when two people lay down together at night. Stop arguing over a word. Stop thinking that you have any right to involve yourself legislatively in marriage (whether gay or straight) at all.
I hope that Norah looks back at this time period twenty five years from now with anger and disgust at the ignorance we're displaying. I hope she falls in love with whoever she wants and is able to commit herself to that person in every way that I've been able to commit myself to Sarah. I hope that she's allowed to have the type of freedom which we say we value for all people.
These lyrics have never been more salient to me than they are right now:
Shai Hulud - "Beyond Man"
Human is a degrading word.
As human, I renounce myself.
I yield to no man.
There will be no peace...
Not on Earth,
Not amongst men.
Indulge. Be content. Soften yourselves.
I look beyond weakness and fashion.
Confide not in flesh.
If I can't change the world,
I'll disregard it and look beyond.
Pray to calm my heart.
Pray for the fools.
I will be at peace.
I am not a man.
And your actions will speak alone.
Ugh. F all this.

Thank you Marshall, your post really did bring a tear to my eye. Knowing that there are people out there as passionate and eloquent as you renews my own Faith and hope.
Thanks again

F yeah, I agree with my brother.
I heard that the largest cause of death for homosexuals is self-inflicted gunshot. Homosexuality is based on lust, not love. When the bodies age and no longer inspire lust, there is nothing left - no love and no God. By the way, since when does the majority matter? God is a majority of one and our opinions do not change Him in the least. If you've prayed your head off and haven't listened to the Word of God, then you haven't heard a thing. Sorry, my son, but the truth is still what God says it is for He is Truth. God is love, and loves the homosexual, but not the sin. He is also judgment; when The Day of Jesus' return comes and the Age is drawn to a close, sin where it is found will be punished. This is the age of repentance and turning to God and following His direction for your life. You miss that and you miss it all.
I've seen homosexuals love with something vastly more pure and true and good than many heterosexuals...
Good post Marshall. I have the same hope for Norah and for my children some day...
Ugh-I'm speechless when I think about it-thank you for finding the words.
Regardless of your faith-based views on those who identify as gay and lesbian, the fact remains that Maine has chosen to deny basic human rights to a large percentage of their population with this vote. Homosexuality is the only remaining personal identity which we use to deny people their civil rights. To think that this is okay is beyond my comprehension.
Even if we are to agree that homosexuality is a sin, I still don't understand how its status as such justifies the denial of one's civil rights. The only sins which do justify the removal of one's rights are sins of violence and force involving the taking of the free will or choice of another. You're comfortable lumping murder and rape in with homosexuality as behaviors or sins which will cause someone to lose their freedom, free will, and civil rights?
Why don't we deny marriage to people who masturbate? Why don't we restrict hospital visitation rights for those who commit adultery? One sexual sin is equal to the other, isn't it? So why do we separate homosexuality from the others as the one which will cause someone to lose their right to a whole host of things entirely unrelated to sexuality at all?
'Cause we've got blinders on, that's why. 'Cause most of us are straight and wouldn't want to pay the price we ask gays and lesbians to pay for being the people they were made to be. It's a double standard based on fear and a lack of understanding of what it really means to identify as gay or lesbian. It's privilege and a sense of entitlement.
Most of all, it's wrong.
Why is violence against the body more serious than violence against the soul? Is the fact that homosexual acts are declared an abomination to God a human invention? Did He not say it himself first? Why? Is he a selfish God, demanding that to satisfy some personal whim of His? Might He have a critical and loving reason for it? Did He not drive out complete civilizations by His people, the Israelites, and tell them to separate themselves from such things because He said so and there is not other God but He? Did He not destroy two cities completely because of it when the men of those cities were so depraved they tried to break into Lot's house and rape the angels God sent to save him out of Sodom? Is not His law against obscene lust as the Creator of everything both His right and His wisdom? Consider His power and His knowledge and return to fear God. Do you think He just might be a little smarter than we are? How dare we question His authority over us when He created every single atom in our bodies and every essence that is our spirit? What has come to possess us that we object when our laws conform to the laws of the God who reigns over the universe and gave His laws because He loves us? He created freedom for Adam and Eve did He not and look what they did with it. What are we doing with it now? Oh, you don't see the damage that homosexuality does? Are we looking through the eyes of God now? Then what damage could a pedifile do? That's not a violent thing and with the proper coersion of a child, it's consenting. So where do we differentiate? Or are we worshipping our human freedom instead of our God? The end of man's reason for existence is God and to experiential knowledge of His unfathomable love, so why do we continually try to destroy ourselves and our eternal destiny by resisting Him and try to silence His voice within us? I agree that freedom is the issue. Men and women want to be free from God and be gods unto themselves, to taste any apple in the garden whether it destroys them or not, just because they can. Rebellion against and freedom from God has never worked to man's benfit in all of human history, so why would it suddenly begin to work in A.D 2009 or 2010? If "I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD AND THERE IS NO OTHER." isn't good enough for you, then He is not your God. Obedience is the only response He accepts and those who do not obey He will eternally separate from Himself and those who do. Any voice you hear that does not conform to the Word of God is not God's voice for He cannot lie. "Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, acceptable and perfect will of God."
